Man shocked to find what employees called him on fast food receipt

A customer at a fast food chain in the US has revealed his shock after discovering a racist slur written on his order's receipt.

In Young Lee, an Asian-American medical student at the University of Pennsylvania, went to a local Taco Bell in Philadelphia on Friday night and ordered food with a couple of friends.

He gave the cashier the name Steve to avoid any awkward discussion on how to spell his name and waited in line for his meal.

But when he received his food, he noticed the cashier had given him a name which left him "infuriated".

"Our interaction was very ordinary and cordial even, until I saw my name on the receipt that read 'STEVE CHINK'," Mr Lee wrote on Facebook.

Mr Lee says he approached the cashier about the derogatory slur who then told him he had written the name to distinguish between three Steves in the store at that time.

"It made me even more upset that he was protecting his case rather than apologising so I lashed out and told him that it is extremely disrespectful," Mr Lee said.

Mr Lee says the man eventually apologised but following their encounter, the employee could be heard laughing with other staff members in the back.

He approached the counter again, yelling at the employee. The store's manager tried to diffuse the situation but according to Mr Lee, only made the situation worse by saying his behaviour towards the cashier was unacceptable.

"How does he expect me to be polite to the cashier when he deliberately took his time to spell out the word “CHINK” to describe me?"

Mr Lee says other customers intervened which prompted the manager to eventually apologise for the server's actions.

He revealed his disappointment at the situation and said he couldn't not say something after a blatant case of racism.

"Normally I would let things like this go but under the current political climate I find it very important to address such issues and voice them loudly and clearly."

A Taco Bell spokesperson told Yahoo7 News that the employee's behaviour was not acceptable and that the correct measures had been taken in light of the incident.

“We do not tolerate this behavior," they said.

"This employee no longer works for the brand, and the franchisee is retraining its staff to ensure this incident will not happen again.

"Management has reached out and apologised directly to the customer.”
