Chaos as tourist speeds towards drivers on wrong side of road

Disturbing footage has emerged of the moment a car almost collides with another car on the wrong side of Victoria's Great Ocean Road prompting calls for better tourist targeted road signs.

Footage, taken by Shanan Greenhough, shows a car driving along the wrong side at Torquay’s Esplanade. The car was thankfully only going about 50km/h, preventing a crash between the two vehicles.

Residents have reportedly pleaded for authorities to install more signage along the popular tourist area along the Great Ocean Road after the footage circulated on social media.

Mr Greenhough said he was shocked.

“I got the shock of my life... I had my daughter in the car and I feared for our safety,” he told the Herald Sun.

The car thankfully avoided oncoming traffic without incident.

Mr Greenhough reported the incident to police, who told him the vehicle was registered to a Tullamarine hire car company. Police did not confirm whether the vehicle was being driven by a tourist.

Another unnamed resident told News Corp many tourists simply can't read the road signs or understand them, putting themselves and others in dangerous situations.

Locals said there had been numerous recent incidents of tourists driving erratically in the area, which is popular with overseas and Australian visitors.

Victoria Police have confirmed they are investigating "reports of erratic driving in Torquay".

"Investigators have been told a Nissan SUV was driving on the wrong side of the road about 4.40pm on The Esplanade," a police statement said.

"The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are yet to be established.

"The incident was reported yesterday and dashcam footage provided, which will be reviewed by police.

"No arrests have yet been made."
