SA winery welcomes Chris Hemsworth

As the sun set over the vineyards at Jacob's Estate Cottage in South Australia's Barossa Valley, one of the world's biggest movie stars was busily assembling a wooden wine barrel.

Piece by piece, a relaxed Chris Hemsworth listened with interest as two local coopers talked him through their craft, while close by, wife Elsa Pataky mingled with viticulturists and winemakers and took photos among the vines.

The pair were guests at a barbecue held at the cottage, during a visit to the region as part of Hemsworth's role as Jacob's Creek ambassador.

"We've been warmly welcomed in the Barossa by the Jacob's Creek team, who have taken us into their home and shown us what makes this place and its wines world class," the actor said.

Earlier in the day, they visited the winery's heritage vineyard, where Hemsworth christened a block of vines named in his honour, and chief winemaker Ben Bryant explained the growing and picking process.

Upon learning he was the first to have a block named after him, the star of Thor, The Avengers and 12 Strong replied in a particularly Australian drawl: "that's awesome".

It was just the kind of response the brand would have hoped for from its new face.

The latest in a line of world-famous ambassadors - others have included Novak Djokovic, Andre Agassi and Naomi Watts - Hemsworth was selected for his symbolic connection to the story behind Jacob's Creek.

"I think the most amazing thing is he's the quintessential Australian guy," Bryant told AAP.

"He's a gentleman, he's easygoing, laid back, loves a chat, loves wine and I think, from a brand perspective, particularly Jacob's Creek is truly an Australian brand that has that unique Australian expression, and what better person or personality to have than someone like him."

That passion was on display during Hemsworth's visit to the Richmond Grove Barrel Room, where he sampled eight varieties of 2017 Shiraz, while Bryant explained their taste and qualities.

Guests, who included Hemsworth's agent Will Ward and partner Christy McClung, used pipettes to concoct their own blends.

Hemsworth, whose favourite wine is Shiraz, also sampled Jacob's Creek Double Barrel - the brand's new range of wines finished in aged whisky barrels.

"As someone who travels a lot I'm always looking for things that can remind me of home and a glass of Double Barrel does just that," he said.

After signing on as brand ambassador last year, he voiced a commercial released in October to promote the range.

Hemsworth also recently starred in a fake movie trailer for a new Crocodile Dundee film, revealed to be an ad for Tourism Australia when it aired during the American Super Bowl.
