One of Australia's most successful comedy exports, Jim Jefferies is the first to have his own comedy special on American television network HBO.

Jefferies was born Geoff James Nugent in Sydney in 1977.

After school, he moved to Perth to study musical theatre and classical music at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.

Several months before completing his degree, he left the Academy and began his stand-up comedy career.

The young comedian then relocated to the UK and took on the stage name of Jim Jefferies.

He first achieved international attention in 2007 when he was attacked onstage while performing at the Manchester Comedy Store. Video of the incident was later included in his 2008 DVD titled Contraband.

A few years later Jefferies made a name for himself in the US, following the debut of his HBO special, I Swear to God in 2009.

Most of the comedian's jokes come from real life circumstances and often cover taboo topics such as sex, drugs and religion, or even hot-button issues such as gun control in the US. He has regularly been criticised for his offensive routines and use of foul language.

Jefferies has performed at numerous festivals, including the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Just for Laughs Festival and Melbourne International Comedy Festival. He has also appeared on various British and US TV panel shows and radio programs.

Outside of stand-up Jefferies has also found success acting and producing. In 2013 he created, wrote, produced, and starred in the critically acclaimed FX series Legit, which ran for two seasons and has since gained a cult following.

In 2016 he released his comedy special, Freedumb, on Netflix and a year later appeared in his own US Comedy Central program, The Jim Jefferies Show. The program has been extended for a second season, confirmed to air in 2018.

Jefferies currently lives in Los Angeles.

He has a son Hank with actress Kate Luyben.
