The grandmother killed by a garbage truck while pushing a pram in Sydney's north has been identified while the driver allegedly responsible has been charged.

The family of Hane Mathieson have spoken of their heartbreak after the grandmother was fatally struck while walking her grandson along a Dee Why street on Thursday.

Ms Mathieson's grandson was miraculously pushed aside out of the path of the truck at a junction renowned to be difficult for drivers.

"The junction isn't great... the visibility is very poor," local resident Alix Parker told 7News.

The grandmother's family took to Facebook on Friday to reveal they have been left "shocked and heartbroken".

Local residents have paid their respects at the scene, with a makeshift shrine laid on the footpath where Ms Mathieson was knocked down.

"Yeah it's really close to home... very unsettling. Just thinking of the family really," Lindsay added.

"The families of both are probably devastated... I can't imagine," another local resident said.

Overnight, Teremoana Tekii, the 27-year-old truck driver, was charged with dangerous and negligent driving occasioning death.

"I feel for the truck driver, it's awful for him as well. It's affected his life forever," Ms Parker said.

Tekii's co-workers returned to the scene on Friday to collect the unemptied bins, this time guided up the street.

Tekii was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Manly Local Court on March 7.
