Mum’s tearful reunion with baby after grandma killed while pushing his pram

A woman has broken down after discovering her mother was struck by a garbage truck and killed on Sydney's Northern Beaches while pushing her grandson in a pram.

The little boy wasn't hurt in the accident at a notorious Dee Why intersection but there was no saving the 58-year-old woman.

A father and a police officer carried the pram with the boy to the little boy's anguished mother.

The mother was relieved at first that her toddler was safe but then overwhelming grief took over knowing that her mother had been run down and killed while walking near her Dee Why home.

"It looked like they'd just been called from work, the father and the mother," Witness Catherine Hasler said. "It's terrible, it's the last thing you'd expect to happen and get that phone call."

Just before midday traffic was brought to a standstill as the Careflight chopper landed in the middle of busy Pittwater Road.

The chopper dropped off a medical team who tried to save the 58-year-old critically injured woman.

Locals say crossing Moorila Street at an intersection is dangerous.

"Doctors were able to attend to the woman at the scene and provide the best possible treatment," Inspector Ellen Kaserman said. "She was too badly injured for them to save unfortunately."

The 18-month-old was found nearby, uninjured.

"The baby was kicking around in the pram and the police officer was just looking after the baby," Witness Aaron Sault said.

Th pram was taken away as evidence for investigators piecing together what happened.

The 27-year-old man driving the truck has since been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death and negligent driving occasioning death.

He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear in Manly Local Court on March 7.
