Islamic leaders outraged after Victorian Supreme Court judge bans niqab in court

A Supreme Court judge in Victoria has sensationally banned niqabs in his court, outraging Islamic leaders.

Justice Christopher Beale stopped the wife of an accused terrorist from entering his courtroom this week, saying all in his court must show their faces.

She was denied entry to the courtroom wearing the full head and face covering, and sat outside during the hearing.

Justice Beale made a ruling to ban head coverings in his court after the woman refused to remove her niqab.

“I require anybody who comes into the court — and all are welcome — but anybody who comes into the court, for their face to be uncovered,” Justice Beale said.

Victoria's Islamic leaders are furious about the move.

Sunrise reported the dress code at the Supreme Court stipulates no hats or sunglasses, even on top of the head.

Islamic leaders slammed the decision as “unreasonable” and a violation of the woman’s human rights.
