Revealed: What woman accused of suffocating her dog was actually doing

A woman accused of trying to suffocate her dog has set the record straight, telling the RSPCA she was actually trying to get a possum out of the greyhound's mouth.

RSPCA NSW on Tuesday shared a video of the woman in Clontarf, northern Sydney, which they claimed showed her "appearing to suffocate her greyhound with a plastic bag".

However the dog owner's friend took to Facebook on Tuesday evening to explain the owner was actually attempting to help her Pointer cross-breed named Moby.

"The owners are good friends of mine and Moby is part of a very loving family," the friend wrote on Facebook.

"He was trying to eat a dead possum while my friend's sister tried to wrestle it from him with a poo bag in her hand."

And the RSPCA confirmed on Wednesday the friend's version of events was true.

"RSPCA NSW has now completed its enquiries and confirms that no offences have been committed," RSPCA NSW wrote on Facebook.

"The owner explained that at the time of the recording she was walking her dog, when it picked up part of a dead possum, and started to eat it.

"Not wanting to touch the dead possum she used a dog waste bag to try and get the possum out of the dog’s mouth.

"RSPCA NSW Inspectors went to the scene and found the remains of a dead possum."

The woman's friend revealed Moby often picked up possums, causing indigestion problems.

"It's been really unfortunate this video has been shared so widely with no tangible evidence," she said.

When the video was posted to RSPCA NSW's Facebook page, some Facebook users echoed the friend's claims wondering if the dog had something in its mouth and the woman was attempting to remove it.

The woman's friend claimed the dog had previously been adopted from the RSPCA in 2016.

She also shared a video of the dog, which she says the owner had sent her, running in a park on Tuesday evening.

The RSPCA had taken to Facebook on Tuesday to say it had decided to "de-identify" the woman filmed in the footage following a string of abuse online.

"While we appreciate people coming forward with information for this investigation, a person of interest is innocent until proven guilty and threats to their safety will not be tolerated," it wrote online.

"This person of interest has been identified and while investigations continue, we have chosen to de-identify them and remove our original post for their own safety.

"We are all here for the good of animals and the promotion of animal welfare, so let's not lose our humanity in the meantime."
