Uber driver bashed, carjacked, dragged by customers in affluent Melbourne suburb
An Uber driver has been left traumatised after he was carjacked and dragged along an exclusive Melbourne street, and left with horrific injuries.
The ride share company has refused to help the man now thousands of dollars out of pocket.
Sayed Atman Shah has also been left without the vehicle he used as a source of income.
He's battered, bruised and barely able to sit down, but he knows he's a lucky man.
The 31-year-old is now too afraid to work after he was attacked while driving for Uber in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Mr Shah was called to a job at Melbourne’s affluent suburb of Brighton, south-east of the city.
As he pulled up outside the home, he was jumped by a pair of masked thieves wielding a knife, who stole his blue Toyota Camry.
“One of the person punch me here, but it was a very hard punch,” Mr Shah told 7 News, indicating face.
“I was thinking that I am killed. I will be killed.”
Partly unconscious, the injured driver clung to his car as the thugs performed a U-turn, dragging him along the road.
“I don’t know what was that, so after that I don’t know what happened to me,” he told.
The attackers then sped away leaving him in a pool of blood outside another man's front door.
“There was a fair amount of blood about and he wasn’t in good shape,” the unidentified good Samaritan told 7 News.
“He was really shaken, definitely in shock.”
The 21-year-old and his friends administered first aid before calling police.
“It’s just what anyone would do really. Doesn’t matter who they are. When you see someone in need, you go out and help them."
Mr Shah said he contacted Uber but was told he’s not eligible for compensation as he is a contractor.
In a statement to 7 News Uber said it was sorry for the driver’s experience but refused to help with medical bills or the loss of his car.
The driver said that response wasn’t good enough.
“They should stand behind me. The Uber should stand behind me. I’m working for them.”
Police are now hunting the victim's blue Toyota Camry, with Victorian registration plates IHK 8LK, as well as the two men responsible for the attack.
