Teenage girls charged for 'exposing allergic classmate to pineapple'

Three teenage girls have been charged after they allegedly exposed a classmate to pineapple despite knowing the girl had a severe allergy to the fruit.

A 14-year-old girl has been accused of rubbing pineapple on her hand and then high-fiving the girl with the allergy during a lunch period at a school in Pennsylvania on December 13.

The victim, also 14, could go into anaphylactic shock and, if not properly and quickly treated, could die if she came into contact with pineapple, police said.

She luckily survived the encounter and was treated at hospital, The Washington Post reports. She was later released.

The girl’s allergy was well known, police said, and pineapple is typically not served during the lunch period.

The 14-year-old suspect is being charged in juvenile court with felony aggravated assault and criminal conspiracy, among other offences, according to the AP.

The two other alleged perpetrators, who are 13 and 14, are charged with criminal conspiracy, among other offences, according to American broadcaster KDKA.

The school district in Butler put out a statement in regards to the incident.

"It is our expectation that our students respect themselves and others. When that does not occur, the district will take appropriate disciplinary action and, if appropriate, contact law enforcement,” the statement said.
