Nando's fined for ‘extremely high rodent activity’, filth in two WA stores

Nando’s has been fined $20,000 after inspectors found filthy cooking areas and "extremely high rodent activity" in two Western Australian stores.

The two stores are in Northbridge and at Belmont Forum. Photos taken by health inspectors in 2016, but can only now be revealed, after being obtained through freedom of information laws.

According to The West Australian, a City of Perth officer’s report detailed complaints about rats in the Northbridge restaurant.

“Extremely high rodent activity present. Cleaning and adequate pest control required,” the inspector’s audit found.

The inspection was carried out in 2016, and in February 2017, the chain was fined $20,000 plus $1745.50 for a number of failures to meet cleaning standards and eradicate pests.

An inspection of the other restaurant, at Belmont Forum Shopping Centre, Cloverdale, found cleanliness was “below required standards, and the inspector’s report said the overall standard of cleaning “must improve”.

That store was handed the same fines as the Northbridge one, while Nando’s outlets at Spearwood and Nedlands have previously been convicted of health breaches.

A Nando’s spokeswoman said the food chain was “very disappointed with these convictions” but added that the chain had implemented a “number of measures” in the last 16 months including retraining staff to fully understand food safety practices, cleaning and maintenance guidelines.

She said that focus has increased across other Nando’s restaurants to “remove the likelihood of re-occurrence”.
