Man found unresponsive behind the wheel in Perth

Mystery surrounds why a man and his female passenger were found unresponsive behind the wheel of a car at a busy Perth intersection.

The pair were in a ute on Leach Highway in Palmyra on Friday, about 9pm. Many fellow motorists grew frustrated when the ute wouldn’t move at a green light.

Witness Aaron Gliddon said people were “beeping like crazy” but as soon the light went red, a man in a vehicle behind him checked the car and told him, “they‘re passed out, ring the cops”.

Mr Gliddon said he noticed the ute before the driver passed out.

“He was just coming up beside us and revving real loud, going past,” he said

“But it had done it all the way down the street.”

A 39-year-old man was behind the wheel. Mr Gliddon said he was “basically comatose” while his passenger, a woman in her 40s, “looked like she was dead”.

WA Police arrived but the driver was still unresponsive and that meant they couldn’t test him for drugs or alcohol. His passenger was woken, but she refused treatment for paramedics and told them she was going to catch an Uber home.

The 39-year-old man was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital to have his blood tested.

Police are investigating if he was under the influence of drugs.
