Man fighting stage four cancer also forced to fight eviction from home

An elderly US man, diagnosed with lung cancer and barely able to move, is facing a fight with his landlord to avoid eviction.

Mervin Haley, of Indiana, is fighting stage four lung cancer and has been taken to court by his property management company, Center Grove Estates, for rent payments, Fox 59 reports.

His family has asked for help to pay Mr Haley’s rent as he can barely move, but the money that gathered didn’t cover it all. They also reached out to Center Grove Estates.

The judge has also ruled as of Sunday, 6pm local time – Mr Harley is out.

His ex-wife and caregiver, Denise Haley, said “there’s no way he can possibly leave his home” and if he goes outside “he’s going to get pneumonia”.

Ms Haley said management told the family Mr Haley is about US$500 behind in his rent, and asked for a full payment as of the first week of January – they wouldn’t accept a partial one.

According to public records, the man owes US$569. With late fees the total is now US$1500.

Mr Haley’s ex-wife wrote a letter to the judge requesting more time to raise the money.

Ms Haley also contacted the leasing manager for a payment arrangement but there’s no guarantee the corporate office will approve it.

The leasing manager also told the Haley family if Mr Haley isn’t out by Sunday, the police will be called to remove their things by Monday.
