'House of horrors' parents accused of starving children, but dogs were well fed
The parents of 13 children who lived in the “house of horrors” allegedly fed their two dogs better than they fed their children.
More horrifying accusations have emerged against David and Louise Turpin as they face more than 30 charges including torturing their own children. They’ve pleaded not guilty in court.
Authorities found the couple kept two female dogs, which were well-fed, in good shape and seemingly well-trained, CNN reports.
This is despite the fact their children were found malnourished with allegations Mr and Mrs Turpin only fed them once a day and kept them chained up.
Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin told the court on Thursday, the 13 children often watched as the parents bought food for themselves “and did not allow the children to eat it”.
But Peris City spokesman Joseph Vargo said the dogs “are in good condition, very active and friendly”.
He added that the dogs bark and wag their tails when they meet people and seem happy.
They’ve since been placed in a shelter.

Many of the allegations, which have emerged against the Turpins are coming from journals the children kept.
It’s alleged children were allowed to shower just once per year and fed once a day. They were found so malnourished they have nerve damage.
A 12-year-old recorded the weight of a seven-year-old while the eldest, 29, weighs just 37kg.
If convicted, the Turpins face 94 years in jail.
