The tiny detail in this selfie used to convict woman of killing her friend

A woman has been jailed for seven years for killing her best friend after a selfie uploaded to her Facebook account became a vital piece of evidence.

Cheyenne Rose Antoine, 21, pleaded guilty to the murder of 18-year-old Brittney Gargol, who was discovered fatally injured on a road near a landfill in Saskatoon, Canada in March 2015.

According to Antoine, the pair had been out drinking and ended up in an argument during their night out, CBC News reported.

She told police she failed to remember if she killed Gargol after a night of heavy drinking but didn't deny that she may have been involved in her death.

But during police investigations, which Crown prosecutor Robin Ritter labelled "quite remarkable", a key piece of evidence was unearthed online which led to her sentencing.

A selfie shared to Facebook, posted hours before Gargol's body was found, showed Antoine wearing a belt which matched the same belt that was discovered near Gargol's body.

Police were then able to use more Facebook posts to develop a timeline of Antoine and Gargol's movements on the night of Gargol's death.

Chillingly, she had tried to cover her tracks on social media by posting a status hours after her death asking where Gargol was.

Police were eventually tipped off by a witness who said Antoine had confessed to the murder after arriving at their house the night of the murder.

She revealed that she had hit Gargol and strangled her during their altercation.

"No doubt this young women has issues...and because of those issues she is dangerous," Ritter said.

Antoine was initially charged with second-degree murder, but pleaded guilty to manslaughter inside a Saskatoon courtroom.

She was sentenced to seven years behind bars on Monday after a joint submission request from the Crown and defence.
