Curious pooch with a taste for adventure hitches interstate ride

A curious Queensland pooch has travelled more than 1500km away from home after hitching a ride on a truck to South Australia by accident.

The Scudamore family, who live in Goondiwindi, were holidaying on the Sunshine Coast in December while their dog Rusty was staying with relatives.

But the mischievous terrier was keen for a trip of his own and stowed away on a road train to Snowtown in South Australia.

Rusty left truckie Paul McDowell and his wife Heather Reid stunned when they found him in the truck.

“He was just sitting there by his truck tyre, all curled up in a ball and as he's got down on the step he's got up and he's wagging his tail and jumped up," Mrs Reid said.

Luckily, Rusty had a phone number on his collar.

His owners Sam, 2, and Eliza, 5, saw their beloved pet on Seven’s Sunrise on Wednesday morning.

They are excited that they will soon have their adventurous puppy back, with pet courier JetPets flying him back free of charge.

JetPets' Scott Williams said a security camera wouldn't be put on the dog, but they will place “a fair few eyes on him”.

It’s not the first time Rusty’s gone on an adventure. Two years ago he ended up 230km away in Chinchilla while the Scudamores were on holiday.
