Revealed: Australia's most dangerous industries

Australia’s most dangerous industry to work in has been revealed with forestry, fishing and agriculture claiming the most fatalities on the job, a new study has found.

A study released by Finder.com.au, studying compensation claims and deaths reported in Key Work Health and Safety Statistics Australia 2017, found forestry, fishing and agriculture is the most dangerous industry to work in for the third year running.

The industry accounted for 44 deaths in 2016, or 14 fatalities per 100,000 workers. It’s had 418 workplace fatalities in the past decade with the most “dangerous type of sub-division within agriculture” being “sheep, beef cattle and grain farming with 279 total fatalities in the same time period”, the report reads.

Transport, postal and warehousing was ranked second and construction third. The top three industries accounted for 69 per cent, or 126 of the 182 reported fatalities.

Financial and Insurance Services was named the safest with 620 serious injuries in 2016 and no deaths.

Finder Insights manager Graham Cooke told Fairfax while forestry, fishing and agriculture had the most claims the number of fatalities across all industries dropped by 41 per cent since 2007.

The Key Work Health and Safety Statistics Australia’s report found body stressing, such as back conditions and muscle strains, caused 39 per cent of reported injuries in the workplace with falls, trips and slips causing 23 per cent.

The cost of work-related injuries and diseases was an estimated $61.8 billion between 2012-13.
