'Insane incompetence': Passengers see red after luggage left off Qantas flights

Qantas customers were furious after about 100 bags were not loaded onto services departing Sydney on Sunday.

Journalist Peter van Onselen took to Twitter to vent about the situation, claiming his flight from Sydney to Perth took off without a single bag onboard.

“How is this for INSANE INCOMPETENCE by Qantas,” the Tweet read.

“Our flight to Perth it was just announced took off with NOBODYS bags. Absolutely unbelievable.”

A spokesperson for Qantas told Yahoo7 the bags did not make it on to the flight due to a mechanical fault with the baggage belt at Sydney Airport.

“We take thousands upon thousands of bags every single day, so about 100 bags didn’t make it on the flight together with the passengers because we had a mechanical fault with a Sydney baggage belt.”

The spokesperson said the bags were from several different planes, not the one aircraft as some passengers initially thought.

In a statement, Qantas apologised for the incident and confirmed that the bags were placed on the next available flights.

“We understand delays are frustrating, particularly during the holiday period, and we apologise sincerely to customers for the inconvenience this has caused.”

According to the airline, most passengers have been reunited with their luggage.
