Emergency warning for bushfire near Newcastle Airport

A bushfire has erupted north of Newcastle and is headed towards the airport, prompting a warning from New South Wales Rural Fire Service.

NSW RFS said the fire was burning at Tomago, about 10km north of Newcastle.

Inspector Ben Shepherd told Yahoo7 more than 50 crews were currently on scene with three water-bombing aircraft.

He said the fire is about 30 hectares in size with winds pushing it towards the airport, but the blaze is yet to reach it.

Earlier, the fire department warned residents of Barry Close, Cabbage Tree Road and Massonite Road to find shelter.

Insp Shepherd said the NSW RFS "don't want people on the road at this time".

"Residents in area of Masonite Rd, Cabbage Tree Rd & Barrie Cl advised to shelter in place as it is too late to leave," it tweeted.
