Locals baffled by mysterious red lights 'falling from the sky' in northern NSW

Aliens and fireworks were among the theories behind a cluster of bright red lights that appeared “falling from the sky” above the NSW Northern Rivers town of Ballina on Tuesday night.

Residents were baffled by what the mysterious beacons were, with one woman seeking answers on a local community Facebook page.

“Did anyone see any bright red lights literally falling from the sky tonight???” Keira Lea asked on Ballina Information Exchange.

Reportedly having seen a bunch of lights in the sky behind the farms at her property, Ms Lea wondered if it were flares set off from the river, but added she couldn’t see anyone there when she went to investigate.

“There was about 5 or so that I saw, only that I looked out at the right time,” she wrote.

“Just wondering if anyone else has seen them? I have no idea and would love to find out.”

Venessa Kotwa responded saying she also saw the lights and estimated observing about eight of them.

“Some fell fast some fell slowly,” she added.

Another local Nimali Pathirana managed to take a picture of the lights while sitting on the balcony.

Some residents wondered if it was fireworks being set off, while others suggested something more unexplainable.

“Oh please don't! I'm watching a documentary on UFO sightings,” one man wrote.

Others were certain the lights were from flares being let off at west Ballina’s Faulks Park, for fun.

“Was talking to a mate who lives in quays and saw them across the creek from his home,” one man stated.

“Probably out of date and thought it would be a good idea to let them off. But really is a stupid idea.”

A number of others confirmed flares were set off nearby, and Marine Rescue attended as a precaution.
