NSW foster mum accused of killing baby boy in her care

Foster care provider Uniting will have its funding and licence for child protection officially reviewed, as one of its foster mums is behind bars, accused of killing a 20-month-old boy.

The 20-month-old boy was reported dead while staying at a rural property near Dubbo three years ago.

His biological mother signed him over to a foster mum voluntarily. His life was lost soon after, while in that woman's care.

After a long investigation, police moved on Monday night.

On Tuesday, the carer, who has been charged with murder, sobbed, as she was refused bail in court.

"He was a good boy. I thought he'd be safe, yeah, I thought he'd be safe," his biological mother told 7 News.

The victim and his grieving mother can not be identified.

"I'm still in a bit of shock I suppose... It was a relief, they didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. I knew someone would be charged eventually,' his mother said.

The little boy suffered a broken femur, and bruises covered his little body, the court heard.

It's the third tragedy 7 News has uncovered, involving a child dying while being cared for by Uniting. The organisation is still accredited to provide foster care.

Uniting told Seven News it: "extends its deepest sympathy to the family and shares a desire to achieve justice".

The Government has now ordered a review into Uniting. The company receives $33 million in funding to care for 350 foster children.
