Harrowing new road safety TV ad labelled 'most brutal yet'

There's no blood or gore, but it still drives the brutal message home - speed kills.

An ad released jointly by New Zealand Police and the Transport Agency shows the emotional aftermath of speeding-related deaths on the road.

In the ad, a police officer meets several motorists who offer up a litany of excuses for why they are speeding - then the ad skips forward to the policeman dealing with the consequences of a fatal car accident.

He visits crash sites with wreckage strewn across roads, collects jewellery to identify the deceased, and visits families to break the terrible news.

"I'm doing everything in my power to stop you from seeing the things I've seen," the police officer says.

According to Newshub.co.nz, there are 11 serious injuries or deaths on New Zealand roads each week attributable to speeding.

"Police officers see the human cost of speed nearly every day on our roads," NZ Assistant Commissioner for Road Policing Sandra Venables said.

"Even when speed doesn't cause the crash, it is the single biggest determinant in whether anyone is killed, injured, or walks away unharmed."

As of January 7, the 2018 road death toll in Australia already stands at six, according to the Transport Accident Commission.
