Grandmother reunited with $20,000 after trolley mix-up
A remarkable combination of luck and honesty has helped return $20,000 in cash to a Melbourne grandmother.
Florence Sindik, 71, lost the large sum of money after a shopping bag mix-up in Carnegie on Saturday as she went to pay her bills at her local post office.
"I was concentrating on what I was doing, paying the bills and then when I finish, I turn around and it was gone, my trolley was gone," she said.
Sindik revealed she had been unable to eat or sleep with the stress of her ordeal, worried she would be unable to support herself and her ex-husband who is in a care facility.
But just days later, Sindik was reunited with the money after a butcher came forward with the cash.
The mixup occurred when fellow shopper Jo Glanville mistook Sindik's bag for her own. She continued shopping until discovering her mishap in a nearby butchers.
The store offered to keep it in case the owner came past before another customer showed them a previous 7 News story on the lost trolley.
"We put two and two together and we thought let's see in the bag. We found $20,000 and we lost it, it was incredible," butcher Trif Rellos said.
The butchers contacted the police who were then able to reunite the cash with Sindik.
The grandmother said she was "very, very relieved. I feel like I'm floating on air."
After Senior Constable Richard Keesman returned the the money to the relieved grandmother, she vowed she would now keep her savings in the bank after her "nightmare had come to an end".
