WATCH: Queensland man baffled by python's fascination with his shoes

Experts have warned Australians to keep a close eye on pets playing in your backyard this summer with snake attacks on the rise.

But it appears its not just our beloved animals slithery intruders are interested in as one Queensland man bizarrely found out.

Cairns resident Sipke Vink managed to film the moment a 2.5 metre python made its way into his garden before getting up close and personal with a pair of his running shoes.

“I came across it when his head was just getting in my shoe so I sat down and kept observing what he was doing,” Vink told Yahoo7.

The snake, believed to be an olive python, made its way around Vink's backyard before getting stuck into the pair of runners.

"After half an hour I thought maybe he is stuck with his teeth inside the shoe, so I tried to pull the shoe off but he wasn't letting the shoe go and was not happy to be touched and started to slide away still with his shoe on his head."

He initially thought the snake was planning on eating the shoes but after its peculiar fascination with the trainers, Vink began wondering if it did have an ulterior motive after all.

“We also have chickens so maybe there was a chicken smell inside the shoes," he said.

After three hours, Vink eventually managed to pick up the snake before taking it to a nearby vet.

"Olive python don't belong here in this part of Queensland," he pointed out.
