WA man convicted over one-punch death to spend five years in jail

A man charged with manslaughter after his punch killed a young chef in Mandurah has been sentenced to at least five years behind bars.

Jason Goodwin, 27, was playing pool at the Silver Sands Tavern on September 20 last year when he was approached by a man he had never met.

Jake Mosley punched Mr Goodwin twice in the face and then left the scene, making no attempt to help Mr Goodwin and failed to contact authorities until his arrest three days later.

The horrific attack was captured on CCTV and happened so quickly Mr Goodwin didn't take his hands out of his pockets.

Both of the men were affected by alcohol and had never spoken before, but the two groups they were in had been talking about a game of pool.

Mr Mosley fell backwards to the ground and never regained consciousness.

He died a week later.

On Friday Mosley was sentenced to seven years’ jail but will be eligible for parole after serving five.

The judge found Mosley was remorseful, but said it was “a violent, unnecessary act in a place of hospitality”.

The Goodwin family declined to speak to waiting media after the verdict was handed down, but the court heard Mr Goodwin’s death had left a massive hole in their lives.
