Borce Ristevski bashed on his first day in jail

Accused wife killer Boris Ristevski has been bashed on his first day behind bars.

The 53-year-old was hit in the head while walking through the prison yard at Melbourne Assessment Prison before being taken to the medical room where he received treatment for minor injuries.

The incident unfolded just hours after he faced court, charged with the murder of his wife Karen Ristevski on Wednesday.

She vanished from the family's Avondale Heights home in June 2016 after having a fight with the accused, which later sparked an 18-month investigation.

Her remains were discovered in bushland in the Mount Macedon Regional Park almost eight months later, on February 20.

Despite always maintaining his innocence, Ristevski was arrested by the missing person's squad on Wednesday and charged with one count of murder.

His lawyer has said that he will be fighting the charge however he didn't want to comment on the attack.

It is understood he is being housed in the prison's protection unit but is still allowed access to the yard.

Police were notified, who have confirmed they will be investigating the incident.

Ristevski is scheduled to return to court on April 18.
