Shooter's 'deplorable' tattoo shocks courtroom as he is sentenced to life in jail

A US man sentenced to more than 170 years in prison has stunned a courtroom with his shocking choice of tattoo.

Scott Sargent was sentenced to a lifetime behind bars at Luzerne County Courthouse after he opened fire on five police officers at a Walmart parking lot in October 2015.

Sargent was found guilty on numerous attempted murder charges in October this year but it was not until his sentencing on Thursday that the truly disturbing nature of his case was revealed.

The prosecutor revealed Sargent had since received a tattoo on his forearm that depicted five tombstones - one for each of his targets in the shooting.

"We learned that he received a tattoo with five tombstones with the names of his victims that survived his attack, with a skeleton skull over the tombstones," prosecutor Jarrett Ferentino revealed.

"I thought the tattoo was deplorable. I think it's disrespectful but it speaks volumes of who he is and what his intentions were that day."

Ferrentino had asked investigators to take photographs of the tattoo, which were then used in his sentencing, WNEP reported.

The officers involved in the attack revealed their anguish over the inking, with Officer Brian Bouton branding it a disgrace.

"The rest of his life he has to look at our names on his arm and remind him that he's incarcerated and doesn't have the freedom and that he failed his mission," he said.

Bouton's wife echoed her husband's sentiments over Sargent's lack of remorse.

"That tattoo is very appalling. I'm very disturbed that someone could actually do something like that," Stacy Bouton said.

Sargent refused to comment following his sentencing which saw jailed for 179 to 358 years.
