Hat-wearing squirrel's special bond with adopted family

A special bond has developed between a family and a squirrel they took in about eight years ago.

The grey squirrel now named Bella was ambushed by an owl in October 2009 when she was just a few weeks old.

Brantley Harrison and her family, who live in South Carolina, took her in and at the time were helping to rehabilitate Bella and three other squirrels, WYFF News 4 reports.

The four animals which were raised by the family reportedly lived in a cage outdoors and were given fruit, veggies, nuts and formula.

After Bella and the others were released the following spring, they all reportedly came back for a few days, but while the other three stopped visiting Bella continued her trips to their home.

Ms Harrison told The Dodo, “Bella sits right at the front door waiting for someone to notice she has come by for a visit.”

She added her trips to the Harrison household occur almost daily, and even shares an Instagram account with one of the family's pets.

And in the images it appears the grey squirrel doesn't mind accessorising with hats.
