Garbage collector tragically dies after being run over by own truck

A rubbish collector and father of three has died after he was accidentally run over by his own garbage truck.

Steve Bishop, described by friends as a “doting family man”, was killed in the accident in Chelmsford, Essex, on Friday morning in front of horrified colleagues.

The husband-to-be, whose youngest son was born in October, died at the scene despite the best efforts of paramedics to save his life.

Cries of “no, no, no” were reportedly heard at the scene of the incident in Osea Way just before 9am on Friday.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: “I heard a man screaming and shouting ‘no no no’ and I came out and it was the driver shouting and the bin man was on the floor".

“All the neighbours rushed out to help him and one gave him CPR. Someone must have called the ambulance because they all rushed to the scene.

“There were loads of police, ambulances and an air ambulance, they even had a drone in the air. I think forensics were here as well because there was an incident van here.”

A spokesman for Chelmsford City Council confirmed one of their staff members had died, adding that they were helping police with the investigation.

A fundraising page set up to help his devastated family has so far raised over £2,000 ($3540).

“On the 8th of December 2017 we lost a true gentleman, a dear man, a friend, a doting father and a true family man," organiser Simon Motley said.

“One of the good guys, he was a local bin man and lived local, so many of you might have seen him on your travels.

"He sadly left a fiancee and three young children behind so we’re trying to raise as much as we can in memory of him, and to give to the family to help with everything and to show how much he was loved and cared for.”
