Teenage car window washer hit and killed as he walked between traffic

Police have warned of the dangers of washing windows at busy intersections after a teenager was killed working on the road in Auckland a month ago.

Cayson-Lei Walters, 16, was struck while walking in front of traffic in Auckland's Greenlane and died in hospital a week later.

Police said he was jogging over to talk to officers while they spoke to another window washer when he was hit, Newshub reported.

Officers said Cayson-Lei did not see the oncoming vehicle as he moved in their direction.

The teenager has been remembered by friends as "a normal boy, like a church boy... he was a crack-up half the time."

Other window washers of similar age to Cayson-Lei have been seen at the same intersection since his death.

"Can't get into a course, can't get a job until we're 16... That's why we're out here doing lights," one of them said.

"This is a very dangerous activity, which can have serious and sometimes fatal consequences, as pedestrians risk their safety by crossing in front and around of moving vehicles," Auckland City East police area commander inspector Steve Clark told Stuff.
