Woman unaware she was pregnant has second baby nine months after first

First time parenting can be challenging enough, but one new mother in Colorado has unexpectedly given birth to her second child - just nine months after the birth of her first.

On September 14 Amy Littlefield went to the emergency room as she was experiencing pain in her lower abdomen.

The 25-year-old had still been breastfeeding her young daughter at the time and was completely unaware she was expecting baby number two.

“I knew something was really wrong so I called my mom and said ‘Hey, I think I need to go to the hospital something’s happening.’ We have a family history of ovarian cysts rupturing after birth,” Ms Littlefield explained to KCNC-TV.

When the staff at Swedish Medical Center told her she was in pre-term labor Ms Littlefield was in disbelief.

“I thought he was joking,” she said.

AirLife, an emergency rescue service, was called to transport Ms Littlefield to Rocky Mountain Hospital, as she had been in an emergency room which she was told was reportedly not equipped for the delivery of premature babies.

But shortly after Cayden arrived.

He was about three months premature, weighed approximately 700 grams and was having difficulty breathing, KCNC-TV reports.

The infant was later taken to the neonatal intensive care unit at Rocky Mountain Hospital.

Some staff who helped Cayden have been reunited with him and were amazed to see how well he was doing.

AirLife Flight Nurse Jared Hedden said, "It’s just phenomenal how strong he is, not needing any assistance breathing, with his feeding or with medications.

"He’s here with his mom and getting ready to go enjoy the season with his family.”

The little miracle is now due home on his sister's first birthday later this week.
