Dozens of dangerous Christmas toys pulled off the shelves
Dozens of dangerous toys have been taken off NSW shelves as a part of a pre-Christmas safety blitz targeting unregulated goods.
From toys presenting strangulation risks, to projectiles and choking hazards, a total of 41 toys have been removed by the NSW Fair Trading Commission.
One of the more concerning 'toys' had a lighter disguised as a small Formula One race car.
The 41 toys seized have been destroyed. Parents who have already purchased them have been encouraged to do the same.
Fair Trading inspectors looked at more than 900 stores and 11,000 toys. Retailers risk fines of up to $220,000 with companies facing $1.1m.
Better Regulation Minister Matt Kean warned retailers selling “dodgy products” that NSW Fair Trading would “not accept retailers putting kids in harm’s way”.

Fair Trading is also warning in particular about discount and pop-up stores, and for parents to be vigilant when looking at even the most innocuous toys.
