Charles Manson's grandson tries to pay for cult leader's funeral on GoFundMe

Charles Manson's grandson has tried to crowd fund money to have a funeral for the cult leader, saying it's a "family obligation."

The notorious leader of the Manson Family cult that murdered actress Sharon Tate and six others in 1969 died at age 83 on Monday.

His grandson and last remaining relative, Jason Freeman, said he hopes to make it in time to claim Manson's body in California before the 10 day window closes.

A friend of the family started a GoFundMe page to ensure Manson’s “remains are laid to rest with the honour, respect & dignity he deserves," news.com.au reported.

“It is with a heavy heart I must announce, not only have we lost a dear friend & loved one. Charles age 83, but two days prior to Charles’ passing away, his grandson Jason Lee Freeman lost his job," the page read.

“We will not sit back & let them throw Mr. Manson away like trash. His whole life he lived with the pain of feeling unclaimed."

The GoFundMe managed to raise almost $1000, but was shut down on Thursday.

Mr Freeman said he will still continue to fight to bury his grandfather.

"If we can't raise money with GoFundMe, we'll find another way. It will definitely be a group effort. It's not just one person, it's a lot of people holding hands," he told the Daily News.

He said he started speaking with Manson over the phone eight years ago, but was never allowed to visit him in prison.

"Most people in the world wouldn't understand. They wouldn't get what I'm saying. We all look at anybody and everybody who kills as a killer. But all I have is my love," he said.

Manson was serving nine life sentences and was taken to hospital two weeks ago.

Despite the overwhelming evidence against him, Manson maintained during his tumultuous trial in 1970 that he was innocent and that society itself was guilty.
