Woman defends dragging her autistic son along the pavement

A UK woman has hit back at claims she is a bad mother after she was filmed dragging her autistic son along the pavement.

The Liverpool woman left onlookers in disbelief when she made her way down a crowded street dragging the child by his reins.

Despite being subjected to hundreds of scathing comments after the footage was shared on Twitter, the 31-year-old insists she's "not a bad mum".

"My son has autism, he has meltdowns and throws himself on the floor, what I am doing in that video is the only way I can move him," she told the Liverpool Echo.

“He does it all the time and won’t get up or let me pick him up...he just drops to the floor like a sack of spuds.”

She said the criticism on her parenting was unfair because people don't understand the difficulties associated with raising a child with autism.

The single mother said her son was diagnosed with autism at just two-years-old and becomes increasingly nervous around large crowds.

“I have the reins on him because he has no sense of danger," she added.

“People don’t understand how hard it is having an autistic child, especially when they are so strong, he has attacked me before and knocked me off my feet, but he doesn’t know he is hurting me.

Merseyside Police have since announced that they are investigating the video after it had been reported to them.
