Father of 3yo girl who went missing after alley punishment arrested after 'changing his story'

The father of a little girl who went missing after he sent her into an alley as punishment has been charged with injury to a child after changing his story.

Wesley Mathews, 37, previously said he told his three-year-old adopted daughter, Sherin, to stand near a large tree at 3am on Saturday in Dallas "because she wouldn’t drink her milk".

He told police she disappeared after 15 minutes under the tree and reported her missing five hours later.

Officers said Mathews has since changed his story, but have not revealed the updated statement.

"Mathews provided an alternate statement of events from those which he had given previously," police said, NBC DFW reported.

On Monday, Mathews and his wife, Sini, attended a court hearing to determine if they could maintain custody of their biological daughter.

The case was postponed until next month and their other daughter is in foster care.

Police discovered the remains of a child near where Sherin went missing, but have not identified the body.
