UK Labour MP in grovelling apology over 'get on your knees, b***h' video

A British Labour MP has apologised “unreservedly” after he was filmed on stage saying: “Get on your knees, b**ch”.

The video of Clive Lewis, MP for Norwich South, was apparently taken at a Labour event and later emerged on social media.

It sparked widespread condemnation, with a party spokeswoman saying: “The Labour Party condemn the language used by Clive Lewis. It was completely unacceptable and falls far short of the standard we expect of Labour MPs.”

Other critics among Mr Lewis’ peers included the chairwoman of the women’s parliamentary Labour Party, Jess Phillips, who tweeted: “Just seen the Clive Lewis video. Obviously I am appalled, just listened to 7 teenage girls speak up about gender inequality. Perhaps I’ll bring them to work on Monday.”

Former deputy party leader Harriet Harman tweeted: “Inexplicable. Inexcusable. Dismayed”.

In the wake of the storm, Mr Lewis, who quit the frontbench earlier this year when he rebelled against leader Jeremy Corbyn, issued an apology, tweeting: “I apologise unreservedly for the language I used at an event in Brighton last month. It was offensive and unacceptable.”

A source from Momentum, whose event Mr Lewis was said to have made the comments, said the MP had directed them to a male participant on stage who was kneeling down to take the score during a game show segment at an event, not to a female audience member.

But former minister Yvette Cooper tweeted: “No excuse for saying this, whatever context.”

And Labour MP Stella Creasy added: “It’s not OK. Even if meant as a joke, reinforces menace that men have the physical power to force compliance.”
