Australian city revealed as home to some of the world's most tolled drivers

A State Parliamentary inquiry has found one of Australia's main cities is now one of the most tolled in the world with the cost crippling drivers.

Sydney is home to almost half of Australia's toll roads and with more on the way, there's a call for a daily cap on how much drivers should pay.

The current number of tolls across the city is nine, but once WestConnex is finished that will jump to 14 and Sydney motorists now believe enough is enough.

"Slugging western Sydney motorists to foot the bill for road construction in other parts of Sydney entirely is particularly unfair," Opposition Leader Luke Foley said.

The government has moved to distanced itself from the proposals, claiming a cap simply won't work.

"Someone has to make up the difference, and presumably the only person who is going to in that circumstance is the Government," Liberal Committee member Peter Phelps said.

But motorists are beginning to act on an issue that has cost some drivers up to $10,000 a year.

"Last Saturday, 82 per cent of people in Blacktown voted Labor," Foley added.

Such statistics offer strong reason for the Government to put the brakes on the tolls and give a glimmer of hope to Sydney's long-suffering motorists.
