Child, 2, crushed to death becomes eighth victim of recalled Ikea drawers

A two-year-old child is the latest victim of an Ikea dresser after it toppled over and killed him.

Jozef Dudek has become the eighth victim of the draws, that were recalled last year.

The three-door Malm dresser fell on him in his Californian bedroom when his parents put him down for a nap in May, The Inquirer reports.

He was found trapped under the dresser by his father and is the fourth killed specifically by the Malm product.

In the recall, which began last June, Ikea offers full or partial refunds as well as providing free wall-anchoring kits to make the furniture safe to use.

The move came after multiple toddlers were killed in similar tip-over accidents.

Jozef is believed to be the first confirmed death since Ikea recalled the dresser last year.

However, Jozef's parents weren't aware that their Malm dresser had been recalled, Daniel Mann, who is representing the family, said.

In a statement, Mann's colleague Alan Feldman called Jozef's death "completely avoidable" and criticised Ikea's recall effort as "poorly publicised".

The company says it went to "great lengths to get the word out" about the recall, including a national advertising campaign, millions of emails to consumers and information "posted prominently" in stores.

Mr Mann said his death was "completely avoidable".

The attorney declined to give further details about the boy's death but said his family plan on suing Ikea.

Ted McGee of Minnesota, Curran COllas of Pennsylvania, and Camden Ellis of Washington died between 2012 and 2014.

The families of those children sued Ikea and settled at $50 million last year.

A two -year-old boy from Woodbridge, Virginia, also died in September 2011, while toddlers also died in 1989, 2002 and 2007 in similar incidents.

Ikea recalled a total of 29 million items sold in the US last year after the products failed industry safety tests because they could fall over when unattached to a wall.

It is unclear how many of the 29 million dressers have been either repaired, returned or destroyed.
