Mum taking a break from cancer treatment dies of alcohol poisoning during Greek holiday

A mother battling breast cancer died from alcohol poisoning during a holiday to celebrate a break in her treatment, an inquest has heard.

Valerie Jones, 54, and her husband Nigel travelled to Santorini in Greece in September 2016.

An inquest has heard on the day of her tragic death, the mother enjoyed a number of wines at a sightseeing trip, a lunch and her evening meal.

Mr Jones decided to go to bed, but told his wife to continue on celebrating with a wedding party at their hotel, The Daily Mail reported.

At 2am, Mr Jones was woken to be told she had collapsed in the toilets and died at Santorini General Hospital.

The Coroner's Court heard she was almost four-and-a-half times the drink-drive limit.

The inquest was told Ms Jones did not have a drinking problem, but the level of alcohol she consumed was enough to cause acute alcohol toxicity.

"Valerie was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2016 and as part of her treatment she underwent radiotherapy and surgery at Poole hospital," Mr Jones said.

"After this we decided to take in a holiday to Santorini in September 2016 to help her in her recovery. She did drink, as many of us do, and had a level of tolerance to alcohol."
