Mitsubishi recalls 50,000 cars over mechanical defect

Mitsubishi Motors is recalling close to 50,000 cars because of a mechanical defect that causes the engine to abruptly cut out.

A problem with the power relays means the part may overheat, potentially leading to engine failure.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission announced the recall on Monday of 48,209 vehicles.

"The engine may stall during driving, fail to restart or failsafe protection may be activated, with a loss of engine power," the recall notice states.

"An unexpected loss of engine power may result in an accident."

The models affected include the Mitsubishi Lancer, Mitsubishi ASX and Mitsubishi Outlander.

The ACCC has published a list of car vehicle identification numbers subject to the recall, which can be checked on the Mitsubishi website.

Mitsubishi announced it would contact known owners of the models affected and ask them to come into a dealership to replace the defective part.
