Las Vegas gunman may have planned to first attack music festival headlined by Lorde

A concert headlined by singer Lorde could have been an early target for the man who killed 58 at a country music festival in Las Vegas.

A senior law enforcement source, not involved in the shooting investigation but briefed on its progress, has reportedly said gunman Stephen Paddock rented rooms at the Ogden overlooking the Life Is Beautiful Festival.

The source said Paddock may have "lost his nerve" and checked into the Mandalay Beach Hotel on September 28 instead, The Daily Beast reported.

Staff at The Ogden have not been able to confirm that Paddock stayed at the hotel.

Before the claims Lorde had already tweeted about the shooting.

"F***. feel sick for the victims of Las Vegas and their families. I'm so sorry," she said.

Paddock, 64, carried out the deadliest mass shooting in US history on Sunday night when he fired shots from a room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

The motives of the retired accountant, who was not known to be suffering from mental illness, are unknown.

The victims were among 22,000 attending the Harvest 91 country music festival.

Police found almost two dozen guns in Paddock's hotel room and another 19 in his home in a retirement community in Mesquite, Nevada.

As of Tuesday morning there were 59 dead and 527 injured, including 50 in a critical condition.
