Revealed: The hidden sources of cash lying around your house

For those looking to make some extra cash, the most common items lying around the house including old clothes, books and shoes could be worth over $5400, according to Gumtree.

The online classifieds and community website has announced 91 per cent of Australians have at least 25 unwanted items worth thousands of dollars.

Most of these goods are clothing, shoes, and accessories, followed by books, DVDs and CDs.

In addition, 76 per cent of parents have bought second hand items when having a baby.

According to the report, the most popular items among new parents are toys, cots and baby clothes.

“Fifty-nine per cent of Australians say that buying second hand represents better value for money. With living standards continually being squeezed, a good deal isn’t something that most Australians would sniff at," Kirsty Dunn, spokesperson for Gumtree Australia, said.

“What’s clear, in an era of eco-consciousness and upcycling, is that Australians are becoming less ‘throw away’ in their attitudes, recognising that the value of the second hand economy goes beyond just cost."
