Oxford student 'too clever' for prison spared jail despite stabbing ex-boyfriend

An Oxford University student who a judge labelled "too clever" for jail has been given a suspended sentence for stabbing her boyfriend.

Lavinia Wooward, 24, pleaded guilty to unlawfully wounding her partner with a bread knife after a night of drinking at her university accommodation on September 3, 2016.

On Monday, the aspiring heart surgeon was given a 10 month suspended sentence, with Judge Ian Pringle QC previously saying a jail sentence might be "too severe," the Huffington Post reported.

Judge Pringle said jail could ruin Woodward's medical career.

"I find that you were genuinely remorseful following this event and, indeed, it was against your bail conditions, you contacted your partner to fully confess your guilt and your deep sorrow for what happened," he said.

"As the reports from the experts make clear, you suffer from an emotionally-unstable personality disorder, a severe eating disorder and alcohol drug dependence."
