Several people injured in attack at ANU campus

A student has attacked several people in his classroom at the Australian National University after standing up from his seat with a baseball bat.

At 9.15am, the 18-year-old allegedly assaulted the female lecturer of the statistics class at the Copland campus in Canberra with the bat before other students in the class intervened.

Three females, including the tutor, and one male were injured in the attack and campus security detained the student until police arrived.

The ACT Ambulance Service attended and treated four people for non life-threatening injuries and they were taken to Canberra Hospital.

The alleged attacker was taken into custody and he is not known to police or intelligence agencies.

The university is offering support to those affected.

"The University’s first priority is the welfare of our staff and students, counselling services are being provided to all those affected," an ANU statement read.

"There is no indication of motive and this is now a police matter."

Police said there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
