Why are Mumbai's stray dogs turning blue?

A contaminated river in India has washed up a bizarre spectacle - stray blue dogs roaming the streets.

The animals are believed to be swimming in a Mumbai river full of industrial waste with local clothing factories dumping coloured dye into the water.

Incredible footage and photos shows the animals wandering around the streets with striking sky blue coats.

Arati Chauhan, head of the Navi Mumbai Animal Protection Cell, posted photos to Facebook of one of the dogs, saying she was "shocked."

The group have complained to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, who said the company owners will now ensure no animals enter the section of the water contaminated with dye.

"We have given the company seven days to clear the pollutants from the site. If it is not removed then we will issue a notice," a spokesperson said, Stuff reported.

Vets said the dye can cause skin irritation and itching.
