'Disgraceful': Twitter attacks Pauline Hanson's 'burqa stunt'

Social media users have condemned Senator Pauline Hanson’s move to wear a burqa in parliament.

The One Nation leader wore the burqa and called for the Islamic veil to be banned in Australia.

"Senator Brandis, in light of the national security of this nation, will you work with me to ban the burqua in Australia," Senator Hanson said.

“Terrorism is a true threat to our country,” she said. “Many Australians are very much in fear of it.”

Fellow Senators, including Attorney-General George Brandis and Green leader Richard di Natale slammed Senator Hanson over the “stunt”, and Twitter users were also less than impressed.

"What the actual f***?" former Greens Senator Scott Ludlam tweeted with a picture of the Senator in the burqa.

Writer and comedian Benjamin Law said he wished there was “more bipartisanship in Australian politics” but “if agreeing that Pauline Hanson is a flaming dickhead is what it takes so be it.”

Other Twitter users labelled the Senator a “moron”, “a joke”, “insensitive” and “an utter fool”.

Australian Race Discrimination Commissioner Tim Soutphommasane said the move was a "disgraceful stunt" and priased Attorney-General George Brandis' reponse.

“Literally the only message Pauline Hanson sent out today is that she is horrendous and a goddamn waste of taxpayer money,” Ivana Kovac Kuti tweeted.

Another Twitter user suggested the Senator try wearing something different to make a point next time.

“Next time maybe Pauline Hanson can wear Harry Potter’s cloak of invisibility,” he said.

Other Twitter users applauded Attorney-General George Brandis for condemning Senator Hanson including Australian test cricketer Usman Khawaja.

"People like Attorney General George Brandis make me proud of being an Australian and a Queenslander. The same can not be said about another," the batsman tweeted.

Peter Murphy tweeted that while he doesn't normally agree with the Attorney-General, he applauded his "rebuke of Pauline Hanson's insulting behaviour."

Pauline Hanson will be appearing live on Sunrise tomorrow morning after 7am.
