Heartbreaking video shows zebra trying to wake up female partner who died giving birth

A male zebra has tried in vain to wake up his female mate after she lay lifeless after giving birth.

Footage filmed by biologist Christophe Courteau shows the moving scene at Esosha National Park in Namibia.

In posting the video Mr Courteau said the male burchell zebra was pulling the head of a dead pregnant female that died due to complications while giving birth.

The zebra nudges the female, lying in the dirt but she doesn’t move.

He tries again but the zebra’s head just flops to the ground, lifeless.
