'How is this legal?' AAMI slammed for ad that looks like a bill

A Youtube star and actress has slammed AAMI Insurance for sending her an advertisement she mistook for an actual bill.

On Tuesday, Natalie Tran tweeted her 260,000 followers a photo of the paperwork that was offering existing customers the opportunity to switch their CTP Green Slip.

But Ms Tran said it looked "exactly" like a bill with a due date and policy number and said she almost paid it.

“How is this legal? People must be unknowingly paying bills that are ads. There’s a due date and everything. F*** this," the actress wrote.

"I was about to pay it because I didn't think, and saw it as a bill. My poor parents get these too. It's an ugly way to advertise."

After one of her followers asked how Ms Tran realised it wasn't actually a bill, she said she doesn't own the car mentioned in the offer and her partner is not with AAMI Insurance.

Many responded to the tweet, saying they would have "fallen for" the "misleading" advertisement as well.

An AAMI spokesperson replied to the tweet, saying the company "did not intend to confuse customers."

"The offer is provided as a SIRA-approved Green Slip to make it easier for customers to switch," the comment read.

Ms Tran responded to the spokesperson, asking if it was then an "excuse for an offer purposely formatted to look like a bill."

"We hear you loud and clear! We're following this up for you now, Natalie," AAMI responded.

In a statement to 7 News Online, an AAMI spokesperson said the offer "is sent to existing AAMI customers in the form of a regulator-approved policy notice in order make it easier for them to immediately obtain Compulsory Third Party insurance."

"This is an offer sent to AAMI comprehensive or third-party property motor insurance customers to switch to our CTP insurance, as clearly stated in the opening paragraph of the notice.

"The offer to switch includes a personalised CTP quote in the form of a Green Slip. It is sent when their vehicle registration is due.

"We have been sending out notices like this for many years as a service to our valued customers. We are not aware of any similar customer complaints received during this time."
