WATCH: Moment family hold cat up to 'world's biggest huntsman spider'

The family say the "world's largest huntsman spider" even spooked their cat when they held the pet up in an attempt to scare the monster arachnid.

The Queensland family say the spider was the size of a dinner plate and terrorised them after it became "angry" when they tried to use their barbecue.

Lauren Ansell from Mount Coolum returned home on Sunday to find the giant spider sitting on the sliding glass door to her patio.

When one of the family member's held the cat up to the spider in an attempt to scare it, it still didn't flinch and the cat, named Aurora when rigid with fear.

Ms Ansell said the creature, which she quickly named Aragog, was as large as a grown man's hand and very "unhappy," The Sunshine Coast Daily reported.

"(The spider) was preventing us from using our BBQ," she said.

Ms Ansell said her boyfriend tried to squash it in the door, but it instead fell off and scurried off into the garden.
