'Cocaine Cassie' reaches plea deal of six years in prison for drug trafficking

Cassie Sainsbury has accepted responsibility for attempting to smuggle drugs out of Colombia, reaching a plea agreement of six years in prison, as a court considers her sentence.

Sainsbury was accused of attempting to smuggle 5.8 kilograms of cocaine inside 18 separate headphone packages, through Bogota's international airport on April 11.

Details of the deal, which will slash her jail sentence dramatically, are expected to be revealed when she appears before the judge early on Thursday morning.

Sainsbury made no comment to waiting media as police pushed her into the court around 5am on Thursday, Sydney time.

The 22-year-old was told that any hope of mercy would be bound to her willingness to dob in the ringleaders of her alleged drug syndicate.

It's believed authorities have now confirmed that deal but whether the court is willing to accept it, remains to be seen.

She faces a maximum sentence of 20 years, but the plea deal could cut that to as little as three years, News Corp says.

On Wednesday, Sainsbury's sister told 7 News the plea deal was the best outcome they could have hoped for.

But Kahla Sainsbury insister her sister's life would never be the same, even after just a few years in prison.

"I don't think there'd be much she can do when she comes back home,” she said.

“It's going to be hard for her to get a job. It's going to be hard for her to do anything,.

"Because she's going to be labelled as 'Cocaine Cassie'."
